What's Critical Mass?
Critical Mass is a term that comes from science: when a phenomenon reaches a certain size, it undergoes significant changes.
In the context of cycling activism, it refers to a demonstration on bicycles, Bixis, skateboards or rollerblades in which participants take to the streets.
Originating in San Francisco in 1992, hundreds of cities around the world now organize Critical Mass events on the last Friday of every month. Brussels, Quebec City, Buenos Aires, Seoul, and Nairobi all have their own Critical Mass events.
In Montreal, Critical Mass events have been around since the 1990s. After being interrupted and then resumed, Critical Mass has been held continuously in Montreal since March 2022, summer and winter alike.

What's your aim?
Some people take part in Critical Mass for fun, others to chat about bikes, or to meet up with friends. All are united by their love of cycling and Montreal.
In recent editions, however, Critical Mass has taken on a more political tone.
We want a city where the most vulnerable users can be an integral part of city life.
We want bike lanes and bike paths everywhere in Montreal.
We want a city where cycling is truly considered an alternative to the car-centric culture that exists in our city. Some neighborhoods are very bike-friendly, but not all Montrealers have access to safe infrastructure.
Due to the nature of our demonstration, taking to the streets means that we sometimes create impressive traffic jams. That said, this is our only opportunity to take to the streets as a group. The rest of the month, cars reign supreme and sometimes violently on our streets, which are our public space. It won't be long, just wait two minutes!
Who is behind Critical Mass?
Critical Mass is organized by volunteers. Although some volunteers are more involved than others in organizing Critical Mass, no one is in charge or makes final decisions about Critical Mass. We operate horizontally, and everyone can contribute to the event.
Volunteers meet every second Friday of the month in a room at UQAM (Sherbrooke pavilion). The agenda includes organizing the next Critical Mass, related events, communication strategies, etc.
Posters, graphic design, communications (photo and video), organization and mobilization: we are always looking for volunteers to help grow our Critical Mass Montreal.
